Glenda May Jackson, CBE (born 9 May 1936) is a British politician and former actress who is a member of the Labour Party. She was initially elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1992, and she now represents the constituency of Hampstead and Kilburn in Westminster. She began her professional acting career in the late 1950s and spent four years as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1964 to 1966, when she was especially connected with the work of director Peter Brook. She was born in London and raised there. In her cinematic career, she was nominated for two Academy Awards, both of which she won for her performances in Women in Love (1969) and A Touch of Class (1973). (1973). She has featured in many more award-winning performances, including Alex in the film Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and Elizabeth R, a BBC television serial that aired from 1971 to 1972 and for which she was nominated for an Emmy. Prior to 2010, Jackson served as the Member of Parliament for Hampstead and Highgate, and he served as a Junior Transport Minister in the Blair administration from 1997 to 1999, after which he became a vocal opponent of Blair. Following the redrawing of constituency boundaries for the 2010 general election, her 42-vote majority was one of the narrowest of the whole election. She stated in 2011 that she would be stepping down from her position as a member of Parliament at the next general election.
