The beginning of the Fifth Harmony
In 2012, all of the members of the group that was yet to be formed competed in “The X Factor”, a worldwide popular television series which follows the competition for the next music prodigy. As all of the members of the group failed to progress as solo singers in the Teens and Young Adults categories, they were eliminated. Nevertheless, the judges including Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato recognized their talents and vocal skills, and the girls were invited back to the stage, and eventually competing as the band named Fifth Harmony. The girls went on to achieve notable success in the competition, being eventually placed third after they failed to qualify for the grand finale.
Fifth Harmony went on to release their debut extended play under the title “Better Together” The through Epic Records and Syco Records – the latter being owned by one of ‘’The X Factor’’ judges, Simon Cowell. Ultimately, “Better Together”, which consisted of five songs such as the title song – “Better Together”, “Leave my Heart out of This”, and “Miss Movin’ On”, received a generally positive response from the audience and did well commercially, in the first week selling more than 23,000 copies, and debuting at number six on digital albums and number 22 on Canadian albums chart. However, it was with their debut studio full-length album, ‘’Reflection’’, that the Girls made their breakthrough, and became widely known in the music field. Several songs from the album made references to powerful women such as Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama and Mariah Carey, and were highly influenced by Beyonce Knowles’ music.
Besides that, “Reflection” was given positive reviews from sources such as the Billboard, AllMusic, Rolling Stone, Spin and Pitchfork, and was described as ‘’21st century’s pop music’s premier powerhouse’’. ‘’Reflection’’ was subsequently certified triple platinum in Brazil, having sold more than 120,000 copies, gold in Canada with 40,000 copies sold, and platinum in the US by RIAA for selling more than a million copies. In the same year, the group announced that they would be releasing yet another studio album, in the making of which Lauren Jauregui and Dinah Jane wrote several songs, working with writers such as Jason Evigan, Aaron Pierce and Mitch Allen. Eventually they named their album “7/27” after the date on which they were formed as a band in “The X Factor”, featuring songs such as ‘’Work from Home’’ recorded with the Ty Dolla Sign, “The Life”, “Write on Me” and “All in My Head”. “7/27” received a generally positive response from the audience and critics from sources such as AllMusic, Atlantic, Digital Spy, Idolator and Pitchfork, and was certified triple platinum for selling more than 120,000 copies in Brazil, gold in Denmark selling over 10,000 copies, platinum in Canada – 80,000 copies – and additionally platinum certification in the US with more than a million copies sold.
