A former girlfriend of the murder suspect accused of killing six people in Wisconsin this weekend said that Darrell Brooks’ mother bailed him out of jail on Friday – and that she regrets it.

As previously reported, Brooks is believed to be the man behind the wheel of an SUV that crashed through police barriers and into a crowd at a Christmas Parade in Waukesha on Sunday evening. Brooks has been charged with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide and his bail was set at $5 million. One of the victims, an 8-year-old boy, died after Brooks’ arraignment.

Brooks had been in custody days before the massacre, on multiple charges connected to an apparent domestic violence incident involving the mother of one of his children. Another woman, a former partner of the defendant, told the New York Post that Brooks’ mother posted the $1,000 bail for his release on Friday.

“She’s wrecked that people were killed as a result and she’s like, ‘I’m blaming myself, because had I not bailed him out, this wouldn’t have happened,’” the woman said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. She also has a child with Brooks, but said and their son have had minimal contact with him in the last two decades.

“He disappeared when my son was almost 3 months old,” the woman told the New York Post.

The unidentified woman said she is disturbed that the father of her child allegedly committed such a horrific crime.

“When I saw his picture online, I was like, ‘What the f–k?,’” Brooks’ former girlfriend said.

“I was embarrassed enough to have him as the father of my child beforehand, because he wasn’t taking care of him,” she said. “What do you think I am now? Mortified.”

Though she and Brooks have been estranged, the woman says she has stayed in touch with Brooks’ mother — her son’s grandmother — through the years, and that his mother has never condoned her son’s criminal activities.

“What’s hurting me more is he shares DNA with my child,” the woman said.
