An armed security guard protecting a California news crew died Saturday from injuries he suffered when he was shot during an attempted robbery earlier in the week.

Kevin Nishita was on duty with a KRON4 crew in Oakland on Wednesday when an assailant attempted to steal camera equipment, KRON4 reported. Nishita was shot in the lower abdomen and rushed to Highland Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

A bystander was hit by shrapnel during the incident, the station said, and was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Oakland police released a photo of a vehicle they believe may have been involved and asked anyone with information to call (510) 238-3426. The vehicle is a 2004-2008 Acura TL, white, 4-door, with a sunroof and no front license plate.

The news crew was working on a story about a recent robbery at an Oakland clothing store in which 12 thieves in masks and hoods swooped into the story.

KRON4, its parent company Nexstar Media, Nishita’s employer Star Protection Agency, and the Oakland Police Department have combined to offer a reward for information leading to an arrest of up to $32,500.

“We are devastated by the loss of security guard and our friend, Kevin Nishita,” KRON4’s Vice President and General Manager Jim Rose said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathy goes to Kevin’s wife, his children, his family, and to all his friends and colleagues. This senseless loss of life is due to yet another violent criminal act in the Bay Area. We hope that offering a reward will help lead to the arrest of those responsible so they can face justice for this terrible tragedy.”

Nishita is survived by his wife, two children, and three grandchildren. He had previously served as a police officer at the Oakland Housing Authority, Hayward Police, San Jose Police, and Colma Police.
