His family is still influential in national politics, and Shujaat’s elder cousin Pervez Illahi worked as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 – 2007 under Musharraf.
Hussain and his party became a significant ally of PM Yousaf Raza Gillani and President Asif Ali Zardari from the Pakistan Peoples Party following the 2008 elections and Musharraf’s resignation.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain was born on 27 January 1946 in Gujrat District, Punjab, in the former British Indian Empire.
He was born into a Jat family. Originating in rural Gujrat, his ancestors had no political background.
Zahoor Elahi was a junior constable in the Punjab Police but left to establish a cotton mill.
Following the partition of India, his family lost a cotton mill but re-established the mill in Gujrat after Pakistan was established in 1947.
In 1954, his father ran for elections and was elected a local union councillor for the Gujrat District.

In 1969, Hussain returned to Pakistan and joined the family industrial conglomerate, including textiles, sugar, flour milling, and agricultural farms.
Hussain’s family had become a powerful industrial oligarch by this point and had a significant influence on Ayub Khan and General Yahya Khan.
