A New York man is in the hospital after police say he refused to drop a machete during a confrontation Monday, following an incident with his girlfriend.

NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey confirmed that the man’s girlfriend, Brianna Cortez, contacted 911 and said her child’s father took numerous pills and claimed he wanted to die while holding a machete. According to ABC 7, officers arrived to find the suspect holding the weapon with an older woman inside an apartment off of 33rd Street and Broadway in Astoria.

Responding officers said they told the suspect to drop the machete multiple times without success.

“After officers were able to get the older woman out of the apartment, officers deployed a Taser,” Corey said. “The Taser had no effect. One officer then discharged approximately three rounds, striking the male in the groin area.”

The suspect, identified as Eduardo Andrade, 27, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he underwent surgery. He’s expected to survive.

Afterward, Andrade’s girlfriend, Brianna Cortez, reportedly screamed at the officers and blamed them for traumatizing her 3-year-old son.

“This is why you don’t call NYPD for help,” she said. “They will shoot you and then blame your family. They didn’t ask questions. hey dragged my 53-year-old mother to the floor, ripped her shirt off, and then shot my son’s father twice in front of him.”

“Did he have a machete? Did he lunge at police? No, he did not…No he did not. And my mother was in between both of them. They dragged my 53-year-old mother, and then they shot him.”

Police haven’t commented on whether Andrade lunged at them with the machete.
