The primary suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann claimed he could not have abducted the British toddler 15 years ago because he was having sex in a camper van miles away.

Christian Brueckner, a 45-year-old German national, claimed his past lover would provide him with an alibi for the timeframe authorities believe Madeleine was snatched from Praia de Luz, a resort in Portugal’s Algarve region. The toddler was on a vacation with her family in the seaside town when she vanished the night of May 3, 2007.

Brueckner, referred to as Christian B in Germany due to the country’s strict privacy laws, further claimed he drove the woman to a Faro airport for her return flight home the following day, and that they were stopped and photographed at a police roadblock, according to Sky News. When they arrived, he noted that his lady friend, who was on vacation with her parents, was arrested for carrying pepper spray in her bag and later appeared in court.

While Bueckner could not remember her full name, he argued that Portuguese officials should have some record of her legal proceedings.

German authorities said they have not been made aware of Brueckner’s alibi. He reportedly made the claims in an upcoming television show titled “Madeleine McCann: Prime Suspect.”

Brueckner is currently serving seven years in jail for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, the same spot McCann was last seen alive. On Monday, a panel rejected his request for parole.

The 45-year-old suspect has repeatedly denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
