Happy President’s Day! And happy birthday to our nation’s first (and possibly best) president, George Washington—who could not tell a lie, and had wooden teeth, and—most importantly—refused to become king.

Then again, given how democracy seems to be working out for us, maybe an American monarchy wouldn’t have been such a bad thing. I’m kidding! (mostly)

It’s crazy to think that since Washington we’ve had 45 more presidents. That’s not that many. None of them has been a woman and only one has been black. There have been no Jewish presidents, no Latino presidents, no Asian presidents. It’s not a particularly diverse bunch.

At the same time, these were radically different men with very different views on what makes America great, what our role in the world ought to be and the role of the state and the executive branch.

Of these presidents, four have been assassinated. That’s almost 7% if you include Joe Biden, or very nearly 9% if you go by past presidents only. Not great odds compared to most jobs. It certainly takes a very specific type of person to even want the job. I sure wouldn’t.

In any case, I hope you’re having a nice holiday unless you don’t have the day off, in which case I hope you’re having a lovely day at work. Let’s do this Wordle.

Well I lost to Wordle Bot again. It’s not surprising today given how many letters are shared between the final answer and slate, Wordle Bot’s top pick for opening guess. My opening pick was not so great. I was thinking of the word novel because I have been discussing the shameful censorship of Roald Dahl’s novels by his own estate and publisher (see video below) and ‘censor’ didn’t fit.

With 377 remaining options, my second word continued this theme with the mildly ironic ‘edits’ (no, rewriting Dahl’s books is not simply ‘editing’ you cowardly knaves). This got me down to 19 and I went for one more in my running theme. In one of the ‘edits’ to Dahl’s work the phrase ‘ugly and beastly’ to describe Mrs. Twit has been cut down to just ‘beastly’ since ‘ugly’ is no longer allowed. Well if you ask me, censorship is the work of a beast, alright. The beast.

This got me down to one and from here the answer was plain: sweat. No tears, no blood, just sweat.
