In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Hopkins, who starred as Odin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened up about his on-set experience.

The veteran actor shared the information as part of the publication’s recent op-ed about how the MCU ultimately “swallowed” Hollywood and has shifted fans’ focus from the actors to the superhero characters they played.

Hopkins first starred in the role in 2011’s “Thor,” which earned $449.3 million worldwide after its release. He reprised the character in two more sequels, 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World” and 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.”

While playing the role benefited Hopkins financially and career-wise, the actor noted that he was not happy with the acting.

He said, per Daily Mail, “They put me in armor; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it.”

Despite his reservations, Hopkins did credit the MCU role for reigniting his career, as he was considering retirement when he was approached to join the franchise.

In the 2021 Marvel book, The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he revealed how “Thor” director Kenneth Branagh didn’t let him give up and motivated him all the way.

“Branagh gave me back the chops to work. I was gonna give it up, really. But you see, [Branagh] won’t let you do that,” read an excerpt from the book.

It continued, per Daily Mail, “Working with Ken was quite an injection of new energy into my life. He seems to have that same infectious quality on everybody in the crew. His enthusiasm, his attitude, is so positive that he brings out the best in everybody.”

Anthony Hopkins Says It Was ‘Easy’ Starring In ‘The Father’

Four years after his last appearance in the MCU, Hopkins won his second Oscar in the Florian Zeller-directed psychological drama film “The Father.” He starred in the film as Anthony, an older adult who was living with dementia.

While the actor had described his MCU role as “pointless acting,” he referenced his part in “The Father” as easy acting in an interview after winning the Oscars.

“For me to play ‘The Father’ was easy because he’s my age — no acting required,” he said per AARP.

At the time, he also advised young actors to not over “do too much” for their roles.

He said, “Just keep it simple. It’s like martial arts — Bruce Lee said, ‘Be water,’ give in to gravity to throw your opponent over your shoulder. If you’re playing a big tragic moment, don’t play it intensely. Once you tense up, you’re stumped because there’s no flow to it.”

Last year, Hopkins reprised his “The Father” role in “The Son,” also directed by Zeller.

He is currently starring in the Peacock series, “Those About To Die,” playing the role of Roman Emperor Vespasian, who reigned from AD 69 to 79, per Daily Mail.

The new series, which is an adaptation of Daniel P. Mannix’s 1958 non-fiction book of the same name, described Hopkins’s character as “despised by the Patricians jockeying for position in the Empire and looking to supplant his heirs to the throne the first chance they get.”

Recently, the first pictures from the set hit social media, with Hopkins spotted donning white and gold robes and a crown in one of the shots. Another shot featured Hopkins posing with a colleague who was wearing Roman regalia.

In addition to his “Those About To Die” role, Hopkins will star in “One Life” and “Freud’s Last Session.”
