Evan Ferguson’s first Premier League hattrick secured an excellent 3-1 win for Brighton at home to Newcastle.

The 18-year-old Irish striker Ferguson opened the scoring for the seagulls after England goalkeeper Nick Pope spilled a powerful Billy Gilmour effort right into his path.

Brighton pressed the advantage well and Ferguson provided a second midway through the second half with a lovely 25-yard curling effort into the bottom corner.

Mail Sport’s IAN WINROW takes a look at some of things you may have missed at the Amex.

Brighton and Newcastle look towards European away days

A trip to the south coast has been about as far as it gets for Newcastle fans travelling to watch their team in recent years – but not any more.

Toon supporters made the 700-mile round trip a day after they discovered where their travels will take them when the Magpies return to Europe.

Tantalising trips to Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan await in the group stage of the Champions League.

And Brighton fans also spent the previous 24 hours digging out their passports and planning Europa League journeys to Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens in the Seagulls’ first ever European campaign

Pascal Gross finally gets his Germany call-up

Good things come to those who wait – or at least they do for Pascal Gross.

The Brighton midfielder has been one of the club’s most consistent performers in the six years since he arrived from FC Ingolstadt.

And finally, at the age of 32, he was rewarded with a first call-up into the Germany squad this week.

Gareth Southgate overlooks Solly March

Gross’s team-mate Solly March was not so fortunate with the winger overlooked by England boss Gareth Southgate,

The 29-year-old looked as though he had a point to prove a he fired an early shot narrowly wide before forcing Newcastle keeper Nick Pope into a hurried save.

Amex DJ gives Fati and Baleba a warm welcome

Brighton’s new signings Ansu Fati and Carlos Baleba don’t yet have have their own chants – but they soon will if the Amex Stadium DJ has anything to do with it.

The sound of Bad Manners’ ‘Lip Up Fatty’ and The Monkees’ ‘I’m a Believer’ boomed through the stadium speakers before the two players were were introduced to the home fans before kick-off.

‘Champions League? You’re having a laugh!’

The most predictable chant of the afternoon?

The sound of ‘Champions League, you’re having a laugh’ shortly after Evan Ferguson had fired Brighton into a two-goal lead.
