Manchester United football director John Murtough and CEO Richard Arnold are at the centre of ongoing talks to settle the dispute between Erik ten Hag and Jadon Sancho.

Sancho’s future at Old Trafford is unclear after he publicly refuted claims made by head coach Ten Hag that he was left out of the squad to face Arsenal prior to the international break because his performances in training weren’t up to scratch.

The winger returned to training at the start of the week after non-international players were given last week off and has held discussions with United officials as the club look to draw a line under the public spat – with Arnold and Murtough taking an active role in trying to de-escalate tensions between player and manager.

Arnold is regularly updated on the progress of those talks – but Murtough’s role is understood to be significantly more prominent.

Sancho removed the social media post that saw him reject Ten Hag’s assertions that he wasn’t training well.

That was viewed as the first step towards a resolution, but it remains to be seen whether Sancho is involved in the match-day squad to face Brighton on Saturday.

Mail Sport last week revealed that United did not receive approval from Sancho to go public with comments about his mental health last season.

It has since emerged that there was also concern behind the scenes at United following Ten Hag public remarks about Sancho’s ‘mental’ fitness.
