Arturo Vidal was scathing in his assessment of Newcastle’s return to the Champions League, saying the game left him ‘sick’ after their 0-0 draw at AC Milan.

The midfield bruiser pulled no punches as he claimed the Magpies’ San Siro stalemate was ‘the worst match’ the competition had ever seen.

Eddie Howe’s side battled to a commendable 0-0 draw against one of last season’s semi-finalists but were under the cosh for large swathes of the game.

He said: ‘Those fools from Milan with Newcastle left me sick. I don’t understand Newcastle, they are fourth in the league (last season), but they don’t do anything, disgusting.

‘They are lucky because they only know how to run, otherwise they wouldn’t be there.’

It seems a rather ungenerous evaluation against a club who were returning to Europe’s top table for the first time in 20 years.

Most sides would be satisfied with a point from the Rossoneri no matter how it is achieved, but Newcastle offered little potency in the second half after a promising opening period.

Vidal, who joined Brazilian outfit Athletico Paranaense in July, also offered a damning assessment on other Champions League games.

He called Manchester City’s 3-1 comeback win against Crvena Zvezda as ‘boring, as always’, and said he ‘fell asleep’ in the first half of PSG’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.
