Tottenham edged past Liverpool in one of the best Premier League games of the season on Saturday afternoon, with Joel Matip’s stoppage time own goal proving vital.

Liverpool had both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off in the game, with Jurgen Klopp’s side seeing out over 25 minutes with nine men before the late winner.

It was a match engulfed in controversy, with both red cards easily debatable and Luis Diaz’s strike at 0-0 ruled out for offside despite the forward clearing being on.

Mail Sport’s GERRY COX takes a look at some of things you may have missed from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Seeing Red

Jones’ dismissal certainly divided opinions in the press room at half-time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and it was no less contentious afterwards.

Although many reporters thought Jones should not have been sent off, Jurgen Klopp said: ‘You all probably think it was a red, but I don’t and the reason is I played football and you did not.’ Ouch!

Son’s 200 up

Heung Min Son’s first-half goal was not only his 151st for Tottenham but his 200th in European football, having played for Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen in Germany before joining Spurs in 2015.

The new Spurs captain is now sixth in Tottenham’s all time scorers, and is setting his sights on overtaking legendary Welsh winger Cliff Jones who is in fifth place with 159 goals.

The celebrations go on

Liverpool fans were celebrating Luis Diaz’s ‘goal’ long after it was ruled out for offside, presumably because they could not see the assistant referee’s flag raised at the far corner of the huge Tottenham Hotspur stadium, nor see referee Simon Hooper rule it out.

It was only a minute or so, once the big screens flashed up ‘VAR checking for Offside’, that the penny dropped among the travelling fans. But even then it was not until after the game that they realised they had lost out to a controversial decision which might have cost them a chance to go top of the table.

Gakpo facing a spell on the sidelines

Despite his unhappiness at the controversial refereeing decisions that cost his side, Jurgen Klopp was most unhappy about the injury that forced Cody Gakpo off at half-time.

The Dutch star left Tottenham with his knee in a brace, having taken a heavy knock just moments before scoring Liverpool’s equaliser in first half stoppage time, and Klopp says he has no idea how long his young forward will be missing.

And through it all

Ange Postecoglou has his own song now at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the Robbie Williams’ hit ‘Angels’ ringing round the stands after the final whistle for the third game running.

Tottenham fans have adopted the song and adapted it with their own lyrics, and the Aussie manager was happy to wave to fans from the pitch long after the final whistle once again.
