Sandro Tonali will reportedly have his Newcastle salary suspended should he face a ban from football amidst an investigation into illegal gambling during his time at AC Milan.

The £52m summer signing is one more than 40 players included in the ongoing investigation, with Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo and Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli also named.

Fagioli was the first of the three Italy internationals to be sentenced, reaching a plea bargain with prosecutors last week that will see him banned from football for seven months.

It will end his season with Juventus but the punishment would be far less severe than a three-year sanction that is usually mandated as a minimum sanction for such an offence.

However, according to a report from Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, while Fagioli will still be paid his Juventus salary during his ban, Tonali may not receive the same treatment.

The report states Newcastle will not be required to pay Tonali his £7million salary plus bonuses during any suspension, and that the 23-year-old may be required to train away from his teammates.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney was handed an 8-month ban for breaching FA betting rules in May and for the first four months was not allowed to train alongside the rest of the Bees squad.

Eddie Howe confirmed earlier this week that Tonali is available for Newcastle’s clash with Crystal Palace, but this could mark his final involvement for the Magpies this season with if he is sanctioned.

Should the Brescia academy graduate receive a 12-month suspension he will also miss next summer’s European Championships in Germany, if Luciano Spalletti’s side qualify.
