Jordan Pickford consulted his water bottle cheat sheet ahead of Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the Merseyside derby, but the Everton goalkeeper was unable to prevent the Egyptian giving Liverpool the lead from the spot.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute at Anfield after Michael Keane was penalised for handling Luis Diaz’s cross.

Pickford hoped to be Everton’s hero with the goalkeeper aided by a water bottle featuring a sticker, which detailed the penalty tendencies of Liverpool’s takers.

Salah fired an unstoppable penalty to Pickford’s left into the top corner, with the goalkeeper taking a step in the opposing direction.

This is not the first time Pickford has added notes to his water bottle.

Pickford previously was pictured with notes on his bottle during February’s derby, a match Everton also lost 2-0.

On that occasion Pickford had prepared for Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and James Milner.

Those notes included stats on their preferred side and details about their run-ups, with a pointer for Salah’s reminding him to ‘check’ his run up to the penalty.

Pickford used the same trick during the 2020 Euro final at Wembley.

Mail Sport pictured Pickford checking the bottle before the penalties took place, but from the angle of the images, none of the players listed took a spot-kick.

Salah’s successful penalty helped Liverpool past 10-men Everton at Anfield, with the Toffees having had Ashley Young sent off for two bookable offences in the first half.

The Liverpool star sealed victory in stoppage time from close range, after being teed up by Darwin Nunez.
