Manchester United aren’t getting the best out of Rasmus Hojlund because individuals are ‘too eager to score themselves’ rather than find the Danish striker, according to Ruud Gullit.

The Red Devils recorded consecutive Premier League victories for the first time this season in a 2-1 weekend win against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane courtesy of Diogo Dalot’s stunning second half strike.

However, Hojlund’s wait for a first English top-flight goal since making his £72m summer switch to Old Trafford dragged on in what was a frustrating evening for the striker.

Gullit only scored four Premier League goals in 49 appearances during his time at Chelsea, but was a prolific goalscorer in the Serie A for AC Milan and in the Eredivisie.

Hojlund has been tasked with transforming United’s attack this season as Erik ten Hag’s figurehead at the top end of the pitch, and Gullit implored United players to help the youngster raise his confidence.

‘I still think you have to get your striker on the scoresheet because if he gets on the scoresheet he gets confidence, then also the rest are looking for him all the time,’ Gullit told Premier League productions (via the Metro).

‘They don’t look for him as much and he’s in areas where you can have a look at him.

‘You see too many players too eager to score themselves, they’re coming inside, they want to hit the target all the time.

‘I played with [Marco] Van Basten, I always thought if I give it to him it’s a goal, if I hit it then it could be a goal. I’d rather give it to him because it’s a definite goal.

‘You know strikers, they’re selfish, they need to score goals. If he’s happy in the team that makes a huge difference for the rest.’

Saturday’s victory in Sheffield saw Hojlund replaced by Anthony Martial in the 63rd-minute.

However, with an upcoming Champions League clash against his boyhood team Copenhagen on Tuesday and the Manchester derby on Sunday, United boss Ten Hag explained he is trying to keep the 20-year-old fresh.

‘He plays often whole games, but idea behind is we have to manage his minutes. ‘Also it is internal competition. We have to keep him sharp.

‘We have to swap in games, between games, otherwise we don’t keep the energy, focus and so fresh in every game,’ said Ten Hag.
