Newly-crowned Peruvian champions Universitario had their celebrations cut short after claiming their first title in decade at the home of their bitter rivals.

The side prevailed 3-1 on aggregate in a two-legged play-off against Alianza Lima in the Peruvian Clasico, with goals from Edison Flores and Horacio Calcaterra sealing a stunning 2-0 away win.

Alianza were expecting to clinch a third consecutive Liga 1 trophy after a creditable 1-1 first-leg draw but were undone by Jorge Fossati’s side. But instead of magnanimously accepting their opponents achievement, the home side opted for a hilariously petty response when the final whistle blew in Lima on Wednesday.

However, the victorious players quickly resumed their revelry – not to be denied by their host’s gesture – and used mobile phone torches and camera flashes to eluminate their festivities.

Plenty of English football fans had their say on social media and wondered whether rival clubs would dish out similar treatment. Arsenal fan Piers Morgan joked that he’d like to see the Gunners pull Alianza’s move if Tottenham wound up winning the Premier League at the Emirates.

‘I’d like to think we’d be just as petty if SPurs won the League at our place,’ he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

It wasn’t all fun and games though as there were some violent scenes between fans after the match, not to mention the saftey implications of supporters, players and staff attempting to empty a ill-lit stadium.

Matches between Peru’s two most succesful sides are normally a heated affair with  the first meeting of the capital-based duo dating back to 1928.

The sides have faced each other a total of 367 times with Alianza coming out on top 142 times compared to Universitario’s 123.

But Universitario has enjoyed more victories in title-deciding encounters including Wednesday win whic also took them one championship clear of Alianza with 26 all-time crowns.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.
