Barcelona included an incredible clause in Robert Lewandowski’s contract when he signed for the club from Bayern Munich, it has been reported by media in Spain.

The forward joined the La Liga side in 2022 and had a fine debut season, ending it as the top scorer in Spain’s top flight.

He’s continued his form into his second season, scoring seven goals in 12 La Liga matches.

The report states that the clause ‘allows Barca to terminate Lewandowski in his third year if he does not play 55 per cent of the games’.

The requirements for this means that he would have to be a starter or play 45 minutes of the matches in the season for them to contribute towards the total percentage.

While Barcelona fans couldn’t imagine their side without the 35-year-old, by the time the clause comes into play he will be 36.

Barcelona, who have had troubling financial situations in recent years, covered their backs and have given themselves full control over the player’s future by adding in this clause.

If Lewandowski picks up a nasty injury or his form drops off, Barcelona can simply let him go rather than keep paying him his high wages.

It remains to be seen as to what the future holds for the player and his club, but the latest report from Spain will come as a surprise to many.

Lewandowski was undoubtedly one of the best players in world football when he chose to make the move to Spain, but could the decision to insert this clause be a smart move?
