Scott McTominay admits the Manchester United dressing-room has been ‘toxic at times’ but insists the players are fully behind under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman faces a critical week of fixtures as United meet Bayern Munich in their final Champions League group tie at Old Trafford on Tuesday night with their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage hanging by a thread.

Ten Hag’s side then go to Anfield on Sunday where he suffered a humiliating 7-0 defeat at the hands of arch rivals Liverpool in March.

‘It is the players’ responsibility, first and foremost, the players know that as well,’ said McTominay. ‘We have had many amazing players and right now we are at the stage where we have big characters in the dressing-room.

‘It is not just a case of like some of the other managers where it has been a little bit toxic at times, the boys are firmly behind the manager. That is the way it will stay.

‘We have got an amazing coaching staff as well so it can get lost in translation with what the players think and what is said behind closed doors, we just want to do well for the football club.’

McTominay believes he is indebted to Ten Hag for helping to resurrect his Old Trafford career after he had the opportunity to leave for West Ham in the summer. The Scotland international has forced his way back into the team after injuries gave him an opportunity, and is the top scorer on six goals.

‘There’s always speculation and different things surrounding every player,’ he added.

‘You have to perform to stay there, I’ve known that since being a young boy watching the senior pros here and the academy players. For me, it was get my head down and work hard.

‘The faith in the manager has been a massive one for me. You want to repay that when you get minutes. That’s the life of a footballer, you will get ups and downs, and it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. When I get the opportunity I want to take it.’
