Liverpool broke the record for highest Expected Goals (xG) figure in a Premier League match during their 4-2 win over Newcastle on New Year’s Day. 

Jurgen Klopp’s side bombarded the Magpies goal at Anfield and had 34 shots in total as they secured the victory that took them three points of Aston Villa at the top of the table. 

Newcastle stopper Martin Dubravka was in fine form, despite conceding four times and produced 10 saves including a first-half penalty from Mohamed Salah. 

The metric is fairly new, having only been recorded by statisticians from the 2010-11 season. It indicates whether any given shot should result in a goal based on the quality of the chance created.

That figure is the highest ever recorded by Opta in a single Premier League fixture since they began collecting the data over a decade ago.
