Liverpool broke the record for highest Expected Goals (xG) figure in a Premier League match during their 4-2 win over Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

Jurgen Klopp’s side bombarded the Magpies goal at Anfield and had 34 shots in total as they secured the victory that took them three points of Aston Villa at the top of the table.

Newcastle stopper Martin Dubravka was in fine form, despite conceding four times and produced 10 saves including a first-half penalty from Mohamed Salah.

The metric is fairly new, having only been recorded by statisticians from the 2010-11 season. It indicates whether any given shot should result in a goal based on the quality of the chance created.

That figure is the highest ever recorded by Opta in a single Premier League fixture since they began collecting the data over a decade ago.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

Reds fans were still faced with nervy conclusion despite their command of proceedings after Sven Botman cut the deficit that had been built by goals from Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo following Alexander Isak’s equaliser.

But Salah converted his second penalty attempt of the game to ensure that the Reds took a big step in their quest to win the Premier League.
