Paul Merson believes Timo Werner could cause ‘havoc’ at Spurs if the German makes the move back to the Premier League.

Werner is said to be close to making a return to England, with Tottenham set to sign the former Chelsea forward on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig.

With Son Heung-min away at the Asian Cup and Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs team suffering a slew of injuries, they have turned to the 27-year-old to bolster their attacking options.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, former England midfielder Merson shared his view on the potential signing, and believes Werner could be the perfect fit for the way Postecoglou likes to play – if he can find a way to stop getting caught offside.

‘The thing that Ange (Postecoglou) likes is pace, he loves pace.’ Merson said.

‘I was a little harsh on him at Chelsea, but the thing is he’s lightning quick. And it looks like he likes pace at Tottenham, buying the likes of Johnson. If he can time his runs right on a big pitch at Tottenham he will cause havoc.

‘But he was offside so many times at Chelsea – for someone who it that quick.’

Chelsea signed Werner from Leipzig in 2020, but the German struggled to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge during his two-year spell in West London.

He netted 23 goals in 89 games for the Blues and was part of the squad that won the Champions League in 2020 when they beat Manchester City.

The forward also collected a UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Cup medal whilst with Chelsea before rejoining the Bundesliga side last summer.

This season he has netted two goals in 14 appearances for the German side, but would give Spurs a extra option in attack – especially with Son’s absence for South Korea.

Spurs currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League, a point of neighbours Arsenal and progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup last night with a 1-0 win over Burnley.
