Brentford have signed Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

Reguilon had spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Manchester United after their need to bring in cover at left-back emerged late in the summer transfer window, losing both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia to injury.

Though the deal covered the entirety of the season, United opted to use a break clause in the deal earlier in January with Shaw and Malacia nearing returns to fitness.

But with Reguilon not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans at Spurs, he has departed on loan once again, joining London neighbours Brentford.

The Bees have made no secret of their desire to strengthen at left-back during the January transfer window after Rico Henry suffered an ACL injury back in September. In his absence, Thomas Frank has had to use several players – such as midfielder Vitaly Janelt and centre-back Ben Mee – out of position to cover for him.

This will be Reguilon’s third loan from Tottenham in the last two years. After losing his place in Antonio Conte’s lineup to Ryan Sessesgnon and the signing of Ivan Perisic, Reguilon returned to Spain with Atletico Madrid for the 2022/23 season.

Atletico opted not to sign Reguilon on a permanent deal following an injury-riddled campaign and he returned to Spurs to try and make an impression in pre-season under Postecoglou. However, the new head coach preferred Destiny Udogie at left-back and Reguilon was allowed to seek an exit, eventually joining United.
