Roma have released a statement rejecting the claims of Barcelona president Joan Laporta that they are interested in joining the Super League.

Laporta claimed on Friday that the Super League project, of which he is an open supporter, had received enough interest to commence as early as next season and named Roma as one of 15 sides who had supposedly voiced a desire to join the project.

After learning of Laporta’s comments, Roma quickly released a statement to distance themselves from the controversial would be competition.

“As stated publicly a few hours after the European Court of Justice’s decision on the Super League case, AS Roma reiterates that it does not support any project related to the so-called Super League,” the club wrote.

“The club also states that it has never changed its position on the matter, nor has it entered into any discussions about taking a different path other than clubs working together through the ECA in strong partnership and collaboration with UEFA and FIFA.”

Roma were among the sides to speak out unprompted following a court ruling in December which stated that neither FIFA nor UEFA could punish clubs for joining the Super League.

With those in charge of the project gaining renewed hope about its creation, Roma insisted: “The club in no way endorses any so-called Super League project that would present an unacceptable attack on the importance of the national leagues and the foundations of European football.”

Alongside Roma, Laporta also claimed that Serie A sides Inter, AC Milan and Napoli had voiced an interest in joining.

Both Milan sides were part of the initial proposal back in 2021 alongside Juventus, who remained supportive of the Super League for years until eventually withdrawing from the group in June 2023.
