Jamie Carragher has revealed his one regret around Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League win.

The defender played the full 90 minutes plus stoppage time as the Reds produced one of the greatest comebacks European football has ever seen to win their fifth Champions League title.

Trailing 3-0 at half time and looking down and out, the side, managed by Rafa Benitez, came back to level the score to 3-3 by the time the game was up.

Though the night lives long in the memory of those associated with the club, it wasn’t all rosy, with Carragher revealing one particular part of it that sticks out in his memory.

‘One of my regrets about when Stevie [Steven Gerrard] lifted the trophy [Champions League 2005] is that I’m not in any picture,’ Carragher said on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

‘I’m at the back stretching my calf, I’m getting cramp at the end of the game.

‘There is a shot from up above and you see players who have only played two games, the right back, Josemi is in every picture, and I’m stretching my calf at the back and I’m thinking, “Oh my God.”

‘Whenever I sign a picture, I’m signing over Josemi’s head.’

Carragher was just 27 at the time of the final, and went onto play for Liverpool until he retired in 2013.

Liverpool have since gone onto win a sixth Champions League title, beating Tottenham in the final in the 2019 edition of the tournament.

They did, however, lose to AC Milan in the 2007 final, ensuring Carlo Ancelotti’s side got their revenge for the events of 2005.
