Toni Kroos has ruled out returning to former club Bayern Munich as he heads into the final few months of his Real Madrid contract.

The 34-year-old spent seven years with the Bavarian giants between 2007 and 2014, winning three Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokal cups and the 2012/13 Champions League.

Kroos has enjoyed further success at Real Madrid to become one of the most decorated footballers of all time, but his decade-long tenure in the Spanish capital may be coming to an end as he approaches the end of his contract.

The German is still a regular fixture in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, making 31 appearances in all competitions, but Madrid look to be building around a next generation of players that include Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Endrick, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Madrid’s Champions League last 16 clash with RB Leipzig, Kroos was asked if a return to Bayern was possible amid rumours of contact from Thomas Tuchel, but the playmaker emphatically denied that Munich would be his next destination.

“I expected a lot of questions about my future today, but not this one,” he laughed. ” I’m always very honoured when someone wants me on their team, regardless of whether that’s even true. But in this case I can clearly say that’s not going to happen.”

Kroos added of his future plans and a potential contract extension in Madrid: “I always tell you the truth, and the truth is I don’t know. I’m thinking about what I want to do. I haven’t decided anything yet. It makes me happy that people want me to play one more year, that’s better than the other way around, wanting me to stop!It depends on a lot of things.

“I want to end my career at the highest level possible. I’m enjoying the moment. I deserve a bit more time to take the decision, I want it to be the correct one. And the same for the national team. I’m thinking about it, but like with my renewal, I don’t know.”

He also hinted at a possible return to the German national side ahead of Euro 2024, confirming he was “thinking about it” having retired from the international arena in 2021.
