It is going to be a grand jury who will decide whether a Texas homeowner will face charges for fatally shooting a man who stole his barbecue pit, says Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
“Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury,” he wrote.
Authorities did not identify the people involved. They announced no arrests.

According to the sheriff, deputies responded to the 15000 block of Ralston Road by Kentington Oak Drive in the city of Humble regarding a man who was fatally shot.
Authorities claim the dead man had stolen a barbecue pit from a residence. The homeowner stepped out and gave chase in his own vehicle, Gonzalez said.

“The homeowner caught up and confronted the male who was stealing the bbq pit a short distance away from the original scene,” the sheriff said. “When he exited the vehicle and confronted the individuals in the suspect vehicle, he believed the driver of this suspect vehicle, had possibly retrieved a weapon. Fearing for his safety, the homeowner fired several times at the suspect, striking him. A second person who was in the car with the suspect was not injured and is not being charged at this time.”
The homeowner cooperated and gave a detailed statement, he said. Investigators will hand the case over to prosecutors, who will present it to a grand jury.
