Thomas Tuchel’s stock has taken a pretty significant hit in recent months.

The Bayern Munich boss will leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season following conversations with the club’s hierarchy, with the Bundesliga champions in the midst of a torrid run of form.

The German giants sit eight points off the top of the Bundesliga table, are a goal down from the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Lazio, were hammered in the DFL Supercup against RB Leipzig at the start of the season and were knocked out of the DFB Pokal by third division side Saarbrucken.

It has been a disastrous campaign for Tuchel and Bayern to date, with the 50-year-old also having to negotiate a toxic dressing room atmoshpere and countless injuries in Bavaria.

But with his unsuccessful Bayern stint drawing to a close, where might Tuchel end up next?

Jurgen Klopp

Tuchel is not the only manager leaving the touchline at the end of the season, with Jurgen Klopp having announced his decision to step down from his post as Liverpool boss come this summer. However, the 56-year-old’s decision was a voluntary one.

Liverpool were desperate to keep a hold of their iconic coach and now face the unenviable task of trying to replace the charismatic German. With no sporting director at Anfield currently, that job is even harder.

Former Liverpool midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is their prime candidate to succeed Klopp, but they face stiff competition from Bayern for the Spaniard’s services.

If they can’t hire the 42-year-old, then Tuchel is likely to be one of those linked with Merseyside, although a switch seems incredibly unlikely. Klopp’s compatriot is a pragmatic coach and one whose philosophy doesn’t match Liverpool’s.

Take into consideration that he can be a difficult manager to work with and has a relatively short-life span at every club he coaches, and Fenway Sports Group are certain to look elsewhere.

Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea are, of course, a club that Tuchel knows intimately. However, his relationship with current owner Todd Boehly is unlikely to be too rosy.

Having won the Blues the Champions League in the 2020/21 season and reached three domestic cup finals during his time in charge, Tuchel was rather harshly dismissed towards the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

There was thought to be significant unrest behind the scenes, especially when it came to transfer dealings, with Tuchel once again failing to cement any kind of long-term legacy at one of his employers.

While Mauricio Pochettino remains under pressure this season after some incredibly inconsistent results, Tuchel is not a likely candidate to succeed the Argentine should he be dismissed. In fact, there are few elite coaches less suited to the role of nurturing a young squad full of high-potential talents.

But, despite all that, Chelsea are Chelsea, and they like to do stupid things.

Thomas Tuchel, Xabi Alonso

The team that have contributed significantly to Tuchel’s Bayern departure, Bayer Leverkusen could very well be searching for a new manager themselves at the end of the season as Alonso continues to attract major interest from Liverpool and Bayern.

If the World Cup-winning player decided to make the switch to Bayern, would it be crazy for Tuchel to swap jobs with him? Well, yes, probably.

However, Tuchel, regardless of his prickliness, remains an extraordinary coach and Leverkusen, who could be Bundesliga champions by then, may not have the pull to attract any bigger names to the BayArena dugout.

Once again, it would probably not be the wisest thing from a Leverkusen perspective, but Tuchel would certainly have the experience to coach a squad that is likely to be torn apart in this summer’s transfer window.

Austria v Germany - International Friendly

Tuchel could replace Julian Nagelsmann…again / Guenther Iby/GettyImages

Tuchel has already replaced Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern, but could he replace him with the German national team as well?

Naglesmann’s contract will expire after this summer’s home European Championships for Germany and whether he is offered an extension to his current deal will depend on his side’s performance at the tournament.

If Germany, who are going through one of their darkest periods in recent history, fall short at Euro 2024, then Nagelsmann could be axed.

While it’s well documented that Klopp is the DFB’s dream Germany head coach, the current Liverpool boss is set to take at least a year-long sabbatical away from football.

Therefore, Tuchel would be a strong candidate to replace Nagelsmann, and international management may be a refreshing change of pace for the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain coach.

Xavi Hernandez

Much like Tuchel himself, Xavi will be leaving his position as Barcelona manager at the end of the campaign due to poor results in Catalonia. The legendary midfielder may have won La Liga last term, but performances have nosedived this season.

If the bookies are anything to go by, then Tuchel is among the favourites to replace Xavi in Barcelona, and he was even reportedly learning Spanish before making his move to Bayern in March 2023.

Barca are also renowned for making decisions that don’t always make complete logical sense, and the recruitment of Tuchel could be another one of those.

While the Catalan giants should search for a young manager with an attacking philosophy and proven track record, it’s very possible they choose the biggest name available, which will likely be Tuchel.
