Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his obscene gesture towards Al-Shabab fans while celebrating Al-Nassr’s 3-2 victory amid outcry against the forward.

The 39-year-old has reportedly been summoned by Saudi Pro League chiefs to explain the gesture he made towards supporters who had chanted ‘Messi, Messi’ at him – as he cupped his ears before signalling towards his nether regions.

Ronaldo has now spoken out after coming under fire for the celebration, moving to defend his actions and insisting he meant no disrespect.

Ronaldo has scored 34 goals in 25 games for Al-Nassr this season and has been one of the most high-profile figures in the country’s division since making the move in 2022, but his legendary status will not exempt him from punishment.

‘I respect all clubs,’ said Ronaldo. ‘And the joy after the [game] expresses strength and victory, and it is not shameful. We are used to it in Europe.’

After Ronaldo had opened the scoring from the penalty spot, his side were pegged back by a spot kick from former Atletico Madrid star Yannick Carrasco on the brink of half-time.

Talisca restored the visitors’ lead following the restart, and the Brazilian was again on hand to secure a late winner for Al Nassr after Carlos equalised for the hosts.

With three points secured by the 3-2 win, Ronaldo congratulated his teammates at the full-time whistle.

But in response to fans reportedly chanting Messi’s name at him, Ronaldo put his hand to his ear before making a gesture towards his crotch with the signal seemingly aimed at the supporters in attendance.

AS added that Ronaldo is ‘on the ropes’ in this scenario.

The Ethics and Disciplinary Committee of the Saudi Pro League will listen to Ronaldo’s first-hand account before making a decision.

Should Ronaldo be banned for the next two games, he would miss two home clashes against Al Hazem and Al Raed – a huge blow to their title hopes – but he would return for a crucial game against Al Ahli – who are directly behind them in the table.

Al-Nassr are currently second in the Saudi Pro League – trailing league leaders Al-Hilal by seven points with nine games remaining.
