A 35-year-old man serving prison time for rape in Alabama is now charged with the death of a woman found dead last November, authorities say.
Maxwell Allen St. John is charged with felony murder and abuse of the corpse in the death of 30-year-old Kyla Bobo, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama said Monday.
Bobo’s family reported her missing in February 2022 after they hadn’t heard from her since late January of that year. After following up on numerous tips and interviewing several people, deputies in November found skeletal remains in a wooded area near Pell City. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences identified the remains as Bobo last month and authorities arrested St. John.
St. John is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for rape in a case out of St. Clair County. He was extradited back to St. Clair County from Bullock Correctional Facility and is currently in the local jail awaiting trial.
Deputies have not said how St. John killed Bobo, why he allegedly murdered her or if the two had any previous connections with one another.
“I would like to give a special thanks to the St. Clair County Drug Enforcement Unit for their hard work and tireless efforts to bring this case to where we are today,” Sheriff Billy J. Murray said in a press release. “I would like to say thank you to the family of Kyla who assisted law enforcement in remarkable ways to bring this case to a successful conclusion. Our prayers go out to Kyla’s family in this most difficult time.”
Murry did not immediately return a call from Law&Crime seeking additional comment.
