Bayern Munich must shake off a run of bad form on Tuesday evening during their Champions League last 16 second leg tie with Lazio at the Allianz Arena.

The German giants need to overturn a deficit in Bavaria having lost the first leg 1-0 in Rome, but Bayern’s recent displays suggest things won’t be straightforward against the Italian side. The Bundesliga champions slipped up again in the title race on Friday evening, conceding a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Freiburg, and have now won just one of their last five matches.

Lazio are also not in the greatest form heading to Bavaria, losing 1-0 to AC Milan on Friday in a game in which three of their players went sent off. That’s now three defeats in their last four Serie A fixtures, with Maurizio Sarri’s men currently sat in mid-table.

Here is 90min’s guide to Bayern vs Lazio this Tuesday.

Thomas Tuchel still has plenty of absentees ahead of the midweek clash, with Dayot Upamecano suspended after seeing red in the first leg. Matthijs de Ligt missed the draw with Freiburg on Friday through suspension as well, but will return to the fold on Tuesday.

The Bayern boss’ extensive injury list currently contains both senior right-backs Sacha Boey and Noussair Mazraoui, who are closing in on returns but still sidelined. Joshua Kimmich will likely fill in again in the backline.

Bouna Sarr, Tarek Buchmann, Noel Aseko-Nkili and Kingsley Coman are also out of Tuesday’s match-up, with Tuchel sweating on the fitness of wingers Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.

Mathys Tel may earn another start for Bayern after his superb strike against Freiburg, while Alphonso Davies returned from the bench on Friday. Harry Kane will lead the line, while Jamal Musiala, who also scored a stunner last time out, will feature in the forward line.

Bayern Munich predicted lineup vs Lazio (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Kimmich, Kim, De Ligt, Davies; Pavlovic, Goretzka; Tel, Muller, Musiala; Kane.

Sarri doesn’t have too many fitness concerns ahead of a crucial clash with Bayern, with Lazio looking to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for only the second time, having only previously done so in 2000.

Nicolo Rovella and Patric are the only absentees for Lazio, with both out until the end of March. While Matteo Guendouzi, Adam Marusic and Luca Pellegrini were all sent off against Milan on Friday, their suspensions will only be enforced in domestic competition, meaning they’re available on Tuesday.

Lazio predicted lineup vs Bayern Munich (4-3-3): Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Pellegrini; Guendouzi, Cataldi, Alberto; Anderson, Immobile, Zaccagni.

Bayern may be in pretty dismal form, with performances having been subpar for some time, but they are still Bayern and will likely find a way into the Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday. The advantage of a home tie against a Lazio side who have also been questionable of late should see them through midweek.

Lazio have struggled for goals at times this season, with the Serie A outfit having only scored two or more in three games since the beginning of 2024. With the individual quality of Musiala, Kane and Tel, Bayern should get the job done.
