Trevoh Chalobah has recalled the injury setback which nearly cost him the entirety of the 2023/24 season.

The Chelsea defender limped off injured with a hamstring injury during pre-season but was expected back in October, only for a setback to send him to the treatment table once again.

Very little was known about Chalobah’s injury publicly until he made his long-awaited first appearance of the season against Manchester City last month – a further four months after he had initially expected to return.

Recalling the setback, Chalobah told club media: “I felt really good. The rehab with the staff here [at Cobham] was excellent, I had been working outside for a while, I had done all my conditioning and been managed really carefully.

“Then you’ve got to step it up. You know that is coming. But in the first drill of that session, my hamstring went again. Man, that was the toughest moment for me. A real hard one. But you’ve got to understand it, accept it, and then get back to work.”

Chalobah has now managed four appearances this season but returned to the team facing major uncertainty about his future at Chelsea.

The Blues are open to offers for the 24-year-old academy graduate as they seek to raise some money for another summer spending spree, and Chalobah was recently asked what the future holds for him.

“With all the noise going on around me, I just tried to stay focused on me being at the club and how much I love the club,” he told the Evening Standard. “I will fight, no matter what, whether I play or I don’t play.”

90min understands Chalobah is not desperate to leave Chelsea and would only consider doing so for the right offer, with the versatile defender keen to join a team who can offer him European football.
