Chelsea closed the gap between themselves and 10th-placed Newcastle to one point with a deserved victory over the Magpies at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring with a lovely flick in the sixth minute but the visitors hit back through Alexander Isak.

Cole Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead with a lovely strike before substitute Mykhailo Murdryk doubled their lead after being plkayed through on goal.

Here, Mail Sport’s KIERAN GILL takes a look at what you may have missed…

That much for Wrexham?

An email landed in Chelsea fans’ inboxes on Monday telling them VIP tickets for their pre-season game against Wrexham were now for sale.

The price of the diamond package? Just $2,995 (£2,338) per person. For that, you’d hope a goody bag containing actual diamonds is included.

Strasbourg fans have had enough

Chelsea’s owners kickstarted their multi-club model by adding Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace to their portfolio less than a year ago.

However, supporters of the Ligue 1 side, who are yet to win in 2024 and battling relegation under Patrick Vieira, plan to march in protest against their Clearlake Capital overlords at the end of this month.

Strasbourg’s biggest fan group Ultra Boys 90 say they are being used as Chelsea’s stooges, adopting a policy where they only sign players aged 21 of younger to see if they sink or swim. Right now, Vieira’s Strasbourg are sinking.

Jackson’s slick flick

Nicolas Jackson’s flick was so disguised that Chelsea’s opening goal was initially given to Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge.

But replays showed it was a shrewd touch from the £32million striker. At least Jackson can now say he has any many Premier League goals as he does yellow cards – nine apiece.

U21 clash a one-sided affair

Newcastle’s Under 21 team are bottom of the Premier League 2 table after their latest loss – a 7-1 battering by Chelsea. Jamie Miley, the older brother of Lewis, was among those lining up for the losers.

Senegal relationship blossoming

Pape Daouda Diong is a 17-year-old training with Chelsea after arriving from the Darou Salam Academy in Senegal.

Already capped by his country, the plan is to send the midfielder to Strasbourg once he turns 18 in June.

Chelsea rolled out the red carpet for the Senegalese academy’s president Galasse Mbacke at Cobham last week in a sign of their blossoming relationship, but sources at the club insist there is no official partnership in place.

A-lister in attendance

Adam Sandler was at Stamford Bridge and you could imagine the regret among those searching for puns in the press box that Billy Gilmour no longer plays for Chelsea.

Academy talents step in for sick stars

Conor Gallagher missed three days of training this week due to illness. His absence along with others saw Chelsea call up nine graduates from their academy to train with the first team.
