Timo Werner’s miss from two yards out during Tottenham’s away defeat to Fulham on Saturday evening came under fire from online pundits.

Two goals from Rodrigo Muniz and one from Sasa Lukic had given the Cottagers a 3-0 lead when Werner came off the bench in the 66th minute.

Three minutes later, fans were questioning how the German forward – on loan from RB Leipzig – had managed to miss such a good opportunity right in front of the goal net.

On X (formerly Twitter), one fan wrote: ‘Werner never fails to outdo himself does he’, while another said: ‘That’s the Timo Werner we all know’.

The gilt-edged opportunity was difficult for the German to squander, which led another to share ‘Werner that was literally harder to miss than it was to score…’, while another claimed it was the ‘miss of the season’, before adding: ‘My Grandma will easily score that’.

The 28-year-old previously spent two years on the books at another London club, which led another to add: ‘Werner hasn’t changed one bit since leaving Chelsea’.

There were no further goals for either side, and Fulham went on to win 3-0, and dent Tottenham’s hopes of a top four finish this season.

Werner’s error was one of several bad misses during Saturday’s football action.

Fans slammed Ellis Simms for an ‘absolute stinker’, before he scored twice in Coventry City’s 3-2 win over Wolves in the FA Cup.

Burnley’s David Datro Fofana was also roundly mocked for a ‘miss of the season’, with the Clarets star left in disbelief by his own inability to convert, despite going on to beat Brentford 2-1 in their Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon.

After the international break, Werner’s Spurs host Luton Town before travelling to West Ham three days later.
