JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Holston Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 42nd new home built in Johnson City since 1985 on Tuesday.

The new Habitat home at 1411 E Millard Street was dedicated to Matthew and Elizabeth. The couple was given a home blessing and their new keys as community leaders delivered remarks.

The non-profit stated in a news release that Matthew and Elizabeth, the new owners, spent months of work along with volunteers building the home and taking homeowner education courses.

“There’s something truly powerful about watching a family cross the threshold into a home they’ve helped build,” Executive Director of Holston Habitat for Humanity Laura Kelly stated in the release. “Matthew and Elizabeth’s journey is a reminder of what’s possible when people come together with compassion, commitment, and purpose. Plus, anybody would be lucky to be neighbors with Matthew and Elizabeth. They are the very best of our community.”

The new home comes with an affordable mortgage, thanks to Holston Habitat. According to the non-profit, the help of community partners will keep the monthly housing cost at no more than 30% of Matthew and Elizabeth’s income.

“Gratitude can’t even begin to describe it,” Matthew Price said. “As we’ve said, this has been something that the Lord has been doing, so we’re just happy to be on board with His plan and be members of this community. We’ve already met the neighbors and had an opportunity to see who we have around us and whose lives we can begin to impact.”

According to Holston Habitat, Matthew and Elizabeth completed more than 300 hours of “sweat equity volunteer hours” while helping build the home.

“It’s a surreal experience but one that we’ve enjoyed every step of the way,” Matthew Price said. “Getting to meet the volunteers, getting to meet all the site supervisors, share just fellowship with our community and everything that’s been going on here.”

The couple is the 366th family to partner with Holston Habitat. The E Millard Street home was also built as part of the organization’s Women Build initiative, which utilizes and empowers women volunteers in the construction process.
