The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office says Macedonia police found the body around 3:40 a.m.

MACEDONIA, Ohio — I-271 South reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday near the I-480 split where it had been closed for several hours as Macedonia police investigated at the scene of a deadly crash.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office released additional details shortly after 8 a.m. that said the incident involved a person who was “struck by vehicles” on I-271, noting that it was around 3:40 a.m. when Macedonia police “discovered a body in the southbound lanes.”

In another update later Wednesday morning, police say the body was found during “a routine patrol.”

“It appears the individual had positioned themselves on the highway and then became involved in a single-car accident, which occurred around 1:52 a.m.,” according to a press release from the Macedonia Police Department. “While police continue to investigate, it also appears that the individual’s actions were deliberate and of their own volition.”

The person was pronounced dead at the scene and their family has been notified. The Medical Examiner’s Office did not release the person’s name.

Police also say the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident fled the scene.

“It is likely that there is front-end damage to the vehicle,” according to police.

Anybody with information connected to the incident is asked to call Macedonia police at 330-468-1234.

ODOT’s traffic map had labeled the closure as a “police incident.”
