The force were called by a shocked member of the public after a “suspicious item” was found.

It has now been confirmed the remains were from a human placenta, according to medical experts.

They also determined it is likely the birth had occurred within the last 24 hours.

Cops have set up a cordon in the park, which will remain in place overnight.

Detective Inspector Andy Day of the Oldham district has launched an urgent investigation.

The DI issued a desperate appeal to trace the missing mum and baby.

He added “our investigation is not a criminal one”, but focused on their “welfare”.

“Incidents of this nature are extremely rare but of course will cause concern, and we share that concern,” said the detective in a statement.

“I want to make it clear that at this stage our investigation is not a criminal one, but one into the welfare of a mum and baby.

“Health professionals have informed us that it is probable the birth took place within the past day, and there is a possibility that either the mother or the newborn might require medical assistance.

“We are conducting multiple investigations to determine the owner of the placenta. This includes checking various UK databases and collaborating with several partner organizations.

“I urge anyone who knows the identity of the mother or baby, or the mother herself, to reach out to us so we can ensure their well-being.”

He added: “I’d also appeal for anyone who has seen anything around the Werneth Park area over the last 24 hours they think might assist our enquiries to reach out.

“Officers will remain in the area for the coming hours and are there to listen to any concerns from the community.

“We appreciate the cooperation of those living locally, as we understand the impact of closing public spaces there to be enjoyed on a weekend.”

A GMP spokesperson said: “A suspicious item found this afternoon (Friday 28 March 2025) at Werneth Park, Oldham has been confirmed to be a human placenta by medical professionals.

“We were called by a member of the public at around 2.40pm. Officers immediately deployed to the park and a scene was commenced, which remains in place, and will overnight whilst searches continue.

“There is no risk to the wider community, however the focus of our efforts is now on understanding the circumstances of how the placenta came to be in this location, and that no-one has come to any harm.”

Information can be passed to the force by calling 0161 856 8906 or 101, quoting log 1860 of 28/03/25.

This comes as cops are still hunting for the mother of a newborn baby boy who was found dead in a shopping bag.

A refuse worker made the tragic discovery outside All Saints Church in Notting Hill, West London, at just before 1pm on March 25.

Police on Wednesday issued an update on the shocking mystery, revealing how the tot was found and urging the mother to come forward amid urgent fears for her welfare.
