Bill Maher on upcoming Trump dinner: 'Let's talk face to face'

() — Comedian and commentator Bill Maher is not making any promises about what might be accomplished by having dinner with President Trump.

Despite their longstanding rivalry, he believes it is worthwhile to visit the White House to meet with his longtime adversary. Republican Trump once famously took legal action against Maher for jokes made at his expense over a decade ago, although the lawsuit was eventually dismissed.

“I harbor no illusions about my ability to heal America—I can’t. Let’s make that clear — I’m not going to be America’s healer,” Maher stated on “The Chris Cuomo Project” podcast. “But if two individuals who have been adversaries for so long can meet… it’s reminiscent of Nixon going to China.”

The pending dinner with Trump was put together by musician Kid Rock, a Trump supporter who has been on Maher’s podcast, “Club Random.”

Maher, who identifies as an “old school liberal,” mentioned that Trump’s advisors likely respect him for critiquing the Democratic Party, even at the cost of losing some of his audience. The Los Angeles-based host of “Real Time with Bill Maher” expressed his appreciation for the honor of being invited to the White House to converse with the president.

“Let’s talk to each other face to face. Let’s stop shouting from 3,000 miles away,” Maher said. “If they expect me to be leaving in a MAGA hat, they’re going to be very disappointed. But I know they don’t.”

He added: “It probably will accomplish very little. But you gotta try, man. You gotta try.”
