SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A substitute teacher is facing two counts of child abuse after allegedly assaulting two students at a Sullivan County elementary school.

According to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), school officials reported allegations of assault at Holston Elementary School to investigators.

An investigation reportedly determined that Jordan Malachai Duett, 23, of Blountville, had assaulted two students on separate occasions while serving as a substitute teacher.

The SCSO obtained an arrest warrant and charged Duett with two counts of child abuse.

An affidavit filed in Sullivan County General Sessions Court described the alleged assaults.

The court document states that a student knocked over a water bottle with his foot when walking into a classroom. Duett then allegedly slapped the student on the upper arm and “slung him into the bus line by his shirt,” the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, the student had a red mark resembling a handprint on his upper right arm.

The second incident occurred when another student reportedly asked Duett if he could “get a teacher to calm the class down.” The student claimed Duett then threw a pencil at the second student and stuck him on the side of the head.

He was reportedly arrested Wednesday morning and later released from the Sullivan County Jail after posting a $2,000 bond.
