On Sunday, March 30, 2025, around 6:15 p.m., a New Castle County police officer heading east on Christiana Road (Route 273) near Thomas Garrett Drive was involved in a significant vehicle accident. A silver Kia Optima reportedly drove across the grassy median, colliding with the front of the marked patrol car.
The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The Kia’s driver and three juvenile passengers were also taken to nearby hospitals, where they are currently in critical but stable condition.
According to initial reports from the scene, two children were ejected from the vehicle upon impact and sustained serious injuries.

The accident triggered a substantial emergency response, involving multiple ambulances, paramedic units, and fire departments. The area near Route 273 and DE Route 1 was closed to traffic as crews handled the situation. The New Castle County Division of Police advised drivers to avoid the area due to the collision’s severity and the ongoing investigation.
