MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — Family and friends gathered to remember the life of a woman who died in an Arkansas crash Tuesday.

Laterrika Woods, 29, was a passenger in the truck driven by Torkilo Hambrick who was charged with first-degree murder after a high-speed chase eastbound on I-40 in Arkansas, state police said.

Dozens gathered at the North Frayser Community Center to honor Laterrika Woods. They lit candles and released black, silver and red balloons in her memory.

Woods’ mother, Khadijah Tucker, said her daughter called her when it happened.

“Well, when it happened, she called me. She said, ‘Mama, we on a high-speed chase,'” Tucker said. “And I said, ‘What you talking about, baby?’ That was her friend, boyfriend. She said, ‘He won’t stop.’ And I said, ‘Tell him to stop now,’ and I heard him say, ‘I ain’t stopping. I’m not stopping.’”

Arkansas State Police claim Hambrick was allegedly going 120 miles per hour in Prairie County.

A state trooper then deployed a PIT maneuver that hit the truck, causing it to flip and crash into a ditch. Officers said Woods was ejected and died at the scene.

“Y’all didn’t have no heart for them other people in that car,” Tucker said. “They could’ve throwed spikes. They could’ve put a roadblock up for that dog, but y’all took my baby. That was my heart.”

The two other passengers in the car were rushed to the hospital. One woman was released, but the other remains in critical condition.

WREG has reported on the ASP’s usage of PIT maneuvers. Some of those incidents resulted in deaths and lawsuits. Despite some of the criticism and concern, the ASP is standing by its policy.

“This tragedy is a direct result of the suspect’s reckless, selfish actions. This is another example of what can happen when a suspect flees from law enforcement,” said ASP Col. Mike Hagar. “Fleeing suspects are terrorizing and traumatizing our communities. Our Troopers will not and cannot look the other way.”

“And I want justice for my daughter,” Tucker said. “Her son, they need to be compensated for life cause y’all took his mama from him. My grandbaby eight. He’ll never see her again.”

Woods’ family has a GoFundMe page to raise money for her son. Click here for the link.
