PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A Pickens County man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday after being found guilty in a 2021 shooting.

Jeremy Lynn Colvin, 31, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of 21-year-old Venson Lamont Barnes, according to 24th Judicial Circuit of Alabama District Attorney Andrew Hamlin. Colvin also received three life sentences for attempting to murder three men.

Colvin committed these crimes at a residence on Seventh Street Northeast in Aliceville on May 30, 2021, the district attorney’s office stated. All sentences will be served consecutively.

According to the district attorney’s office, police responded to the home early that morning. They found Barnes unresponsive in a kitchen and three other men shot. The surviving victims identified Colvin as the shooter. Colvin was found guilty on the charges in February.

The district attorney’s office stated the state proved Colvin was convicted of three previous felonies and was charged with unrelated felony offenses while incarcerated. Victim and family statements were entered as evidence for the court’s consideration.

“The sentences handed down today ensure that Jeremy Colvin will spend the rest of his life in
prison, unable to harm anyone else,” Hamlin said in a statement. “While no punishment can bring back Venson Barnes or undo the harm caused to the survivors, this sentence holds the
defendant fully accountable for his senseless and violent actions. I hope it brings some measure of healing to the victims and their families, who have shown incredible strength throughout the
investigation and trial.”
