A 12-hour police chase has come to an end after heavily armed officers fired at a woman armed with a gun inside a car in Melbourne’s south-east.

Police alleged a stolen Ford Fairmont was evading officers overnight and was intercepted on Police Road near Springvale Road in Mulgrave about 5.30am today.

A 29-year-old woman from Noble Park was allegedly in the car and armed with a gun. She allegedly threatened the driver and was shot through the windscreen by police.

She was pulled from the car and pinned to the ground before being treated for her wounds.

Moments later, the driver of the car surrendered to police.

The woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening upper body injuries and was tonight under police guard.

The man, a 27-year-old from Noble Park, was arrested at the scene.

The arrests brought an end to hours of drama, which started yesterday afternoon when the man allegedly carjacked a family from Nobel Park.

“The husband has seen a bulge … around the male’s waist and believed that to be a gun,” Victoria Police Acting Commissioner Damian Jackson said.

Almost 12 hours later from the alleged carjacking, police spotted the pair allegedly pointing a gun out the car window.

A police helicopter tracked the car across the south-east, allegedly clocking speeds of up to 100 km/h, doing burnouts at roundabouts and driving on the wrong side of the road – all while a gun was pointed at other cars.

Police alleged the pair also terrorised a man as he walked along Albert Avenue in Springvale. Shortly after that, officers intercepted the pair on Police Road.

The woman and man will be questioned later.

An investigation will be overseen by Professional Standards Command.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
