(NEXSTAR) — “This is maybe my best track,” Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron told reporters on Saturday, after he earned his 15th pole of his Cup Series career. It’s Byron’s second pole win of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series, according to NASCAR.

It’s all in preparation for Sunday’s Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina. The weekend promises to be a momentous one, as it’s both the official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR and Darlington Raceway’s 75th Anniversary celebration.

Byron, 27, says Darlington is special to him for many reasons.

“It’s just a place I love coming to,” Byron said Saturday. “I think that ever since I’ve been here as a driver, I’ve just enjoyed coming down here. It’s a tough challenge. It really tests you, mentally and physically. Off the track, I had a lot of nostalgia coming here. As a kid, it was just the place that I loved seeing on the way to Myrtle Beach. I just dreamed about racing here.”

As reported by NASCAR, Byron placed on top of Saturday’s board, leading with a speed of 170.904 mph. Rounding out the top five are: RFK Racing driver Ryan Preece (second); Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin (third); Chase Briscoe (fourth); and Bubba Wallace (fifth).

Signature to Sunday’s race, drivers will pay homage to the past with NASCAR paint schemes of the past on their own vehicles. Byron will be driving the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet, NASCAR reports.

The Goodyear 400 begins at 3 p.m. ET Sunday, April 6.

It’s a weekend that will be about looking back, as reflected by Byron’s comments Saturday, that Darlington “has a special place in my heart.”
