Aimee Lou Wood has spoke about the internet frenzy surrounding her teeth, admitting it’s ‘weird’ that her knashers are being seen as ‘inspiring.’
The White Lotus star, 31, has admitted that she was once bullied for her appearance, and despite the positive response now, she’s grown tired about speaking about her teeth on multiple occasions.
Discussing the reaction to her distinct teeth, Aimee told The Sunday Times’ Culture Magazine: ‘It’s, like, cool, and now I want to stop f***ing talking about it. Can I talk about my character? Why am I talking about my gnashers?
‘It’s like now I’m just a pair of front teeth. I understand what it represents. People feel more confident about their imperfections.
‘It does feel a bit weird that the thing I got bullied for is now the thing that everyone’s, like, ”woo!” before clapping and adding: ‘It’s still the thing that’s defining me.’
Aimee had previously admitted that she was initially nervous to star alongside some huge Hollywood names in The White Lotus. However, she now loves how their lifestyle differences – and her looks – set her apart.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Aimee remarked: ‘These people live in Hollywood. I live in my little flat in South East London.
‘I’m so British in my sensibility that I wasn’t sure how to handle being around so many people who are so front-footed and confident. All I ever do is take the p*** out of myself.’
Directly addressing the constant attention her distinctive teeth get, she added: ‘Even the way (The White Lotus fans) are talking about me and my teeth — that I don’t have veneers or Botox – it feels a bit rebellious.’
On The Jonathan Ross show last month, Aimee also addressed the wild reaction her teeth have received in the US.
She said: ‘I can’t believe the impact my teeth are having. The Americans can’t believe it. They’re being lovely [and there’s] videos of orthodontists coming up [online] analysing my teeth.
‘They dissect my teeth and say, ‘What’s wrong with them?’ and at the end go, ‘But I don’t think she should change a thing!’ It’s a real full circle moment after being bullied and now people are clapping.’
Speaking about whether people have asked her if they’re false teeth, Aimee said: ‘100%. People are like, ‘They’re real?!’
Fellow guest Sir Stephen Fry noted historically: ‘It’s considered a sign of sexual heat to have gap teeth.’
Aimee responded: ‘I’ve got several gaps, so…’
The beauty, who shot to fame in the Netflix show Sex Education, previously told how she once thought she was ‘too ugly’ to land major roles after being tormented by bullies.
Aimee revealed to the Observer back in 2021 how she used to be bullied over her appearance when she was younger, being picked on about her body and teeth.
This led to the star, who attended top acting academy RADA before taking on meaty theatre roles at the National Theatre in London among others, believing she wouldn’t get a TV job because she was ‘too weird-looking’.
A year earlier she was asked by Stylist if her teeth were a ‘barrier’ when it came to her career, with Aimee remarking that this was not the case.
She said: ‘It’s completely in my head. It’s a myth I’ve told myself. I had it in my brain that I’m not conventional-looking enough and that’s a mental barrier I’ve had to overcome.’
However, despite her words, last month Aimee admitted that her pearly whites may have stopped her landing a role as an American character.
She said during the February On Demand Entertainment interview: ‘It’s the teeth. Like, no Americans have my teeth. They just don’t. I’d have to get veneers. Because … I think that genuinely is like one of the things.’
The actress portrays Chelsea in The White Lotus, the young girlfriend of Rick (Walton Goggins) who takes her to Thailand for a couple’s retreat but has other motivations behind the trip.
The third series is set to conclude on Sunday in the US, and will air on Sky Atlantic in the UK on Monday, April 7, with a 90-minute finale.
