The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has announced plans to restore the historic Alaafin’s palace in Oyo town, referring to the project as long overdue.
During an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune, the monarch disclosed that the palace, originally constructed almost 200 years ago by Atiba Latunbosun, the first Alaafin of the current Oyo, has not seen any major reconstruction efforts since its establishment.
Oba Owoade highlighted the necessity for updates, remarking, “Anyone visiting the Aafin can see that renovations are needed. New structures should be built, and some existing ones require refurbishment.”
The reconstruction plans will focus on preserving the traditional and cultural heritage of the palace while addressing the structural needs of the ancient site.
“We are looking at reconstructing the palace without compromising the standard, culture, and tradition,” he assured.
The Alaafin also paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, for his efforts in promoting Yoruba culture.
“I commend Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi, my immediate predecessor. He really did very well in properly projecting Yoruba culture and tradition. I want to take it from where he left it and take our culture and tradition to the next level,” Oba Owoade said.
Reflecting on his ascension to the throne, Oba Owoade shared that he initially had no intention of competing for the title but was eventually persuaded to accept the role.
Having spent over 20 years abroad, the Alaafin recounted waking up in Canada to find out that he had been chosen as the Alaafin-elect.
Oba Owoade’s vision for Oyo includes a strong focus on youth empowerment, peace, unity, and cultural preservation.
He is also working on providing vocational training for the youth and setting up a community health center to offer free medical services to the people of Oyo, particularly the underprivileged.
The monarch also plans to honor those who have contributed to Oyo’s development by naming streets after notable figures.
