On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump hosted a rally in Michigan to commemorate the first 100 days of his second term. This event marked his most significant public appearance since re-entering the White House, taking place in a state deeply affected by his aggressive trade tariffs and contentious relationship with Canada.

Trump visited the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in the afternoon for an announcement with Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. He was set to address a crowd at Macomb Community College, located north of Detroit, where he celebrated his efforts to disrupt traditional government, societal, political, and foreign policy standards.

The Republican administration’s tough stance on immigration has led to a significant drop in illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border. Additionally, the government reduction initiatives spearheaded by billionaire adviser Elon Musk have deeply impacted Washington. The administration’s protective import taxes, applied to trade partners of the US, have also aimed to reorganize a global economic system that America meticulously developed and supported since the end of World War II.

Governor Whitmer, who is often considered a potential future presidential candidate, will also draw attention. A long-time critic of Trump, Whitmer has recently sought areas of agreement with him, including meeting with him at the White House and engaging in discussions about the future of the Selfridge base.

Whitmer is concerned about the A-10 aircraft stationed at the base being phased out, though Trump recently said he hoped to keep Selfridge “open, strong, thriving”.

The Michigan pollster noted that Whitmer has continued to criticize Trump on key issues like the environment. But, he added, “She does, I think, more so than a lot of other Democrats, realise that the guy’s in office, and it probably makes sense to try and — to the extent possible on those things where they agree — work together with him.”
