Ruben Amorim has reminded Manchester United fans of how swiftly “everything can change” after witnessing Liverpool equate the club’s English record number of league titles.
Liverpool’s Premier League victory this season marks their 20th overall title, drawing them level with United’s top tally. The Red Devils achieved that milestone over a decade ago in the 2012/13 season and have not mounted a significant challenge since. Fan morale is low as this season is their worst in the Premier League era and could represent a new low since 1974.
With United eager to return to their glory days – an initiative to become England’s football champions for the 21st time by 2028 is reportedly in place – Amorim has offered fans reassurance.
“The first thing is to focus on ourselves, not on the other teams. The next thing is to be really honest. [United and Liverpool] are in different levels in this moment. But everything can change. When I started [watching] the Premier League, it was the opposite, so everything can change.”
Amorim was referring to United’s longstanding dominance of the domestic scene throughout the 1990s and 2000s, at a time when Liverpool were in their own slump after dominating for two decades prior. The Merseysiders ended a 30-year league title drought as recently as 2019/20, having finished eighth four seasons earlier, and a distance fourth in 2017/18.
Leicester City’s 2015/16 triumph shows that even what feels like the impossible is still possible. Chelsea also went from tenth to first in 12 months from 2015/16 to 2016/17 when Antonio Conte revolutionised the squad with a new tactical system similar to Amorim’s at Old Trafford.
“We need to focus on step by step, not trying to think too far ahead,” the United boss, who has previously said that four years is too many to build a title challenge, stressed.
“We have an ultimate goal, which is winning the Premier League. I’m not crazy, I know that is not going to be next year. We need to improve next year. But I know it is important for the fans. We know that but we need to be honest with them and work hard every day.”
