OAK PARK, Ill. (WGN) – An armored Brink’s truck dropped about $300,000 on an Illinois street last week, reportedly causing a frenzy among onlookers who rushed to grab the cash.

Police were made aware of the incident after a Brink’s employee called them on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 22. The employee explained that the truck’s back doors opened “by unknown means” while driving through the village of Oak Park.

In total, three bags of money fell from the truck, the employee said.

When the driver returned to the scene of the incident, “they observed between 50-100 people removing money from the scene and fleeing the area both on foot and in vehicles,” police wrote in a statement shared with Nexstar’s WGN.

The total estimated loss was around $300,000.

Brink’s declined to provide further details of the incident when contacted by WGN.

“In general, and in the interest of the safety of our employees and others who may be affected on matters concerning law enforcement, we do not comment and recommend that you approach the relevant law enforcement agencies for further background on the incident,” Brink’s said in a statement.

A representative for the Oak Park police did not say whether the people who allegedly grabbed the cash could face criminal charges. Anyone wishing to share information is being encouraged to submit an anonymous tip to 708-464-1636 or at www.oak-park.us./crimetip.

An investigation is currently ongoing, the Oak Park Police Department said.
