Four false killer whales have died and three more remain stranded off a beach in Western Australia.

The Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) was informed about seven false killer whales located approximately 20 metres from House Beach, a secluded 150 metre-long sandy area situated about 12km east of Bremer Bay and roughly 540km south-east of Perth.

Staff journeyed to the location to assess the situation and confirmed that four of the whales have died.

Drones are surveilling the area to rule out any further strandings nearby.

Wildlife staff will attempt to refloat the remaining three whales.

If it proves unsuccessful, and there are no other humane course of action, the whales may be euthanised.

“DBCA staff are evaluating the circumstances to establish the most suitable and humane approach, which will probably be euthanasia,” the department stated.

In the meantime, a shark alert has been issued for House Beach.

The public is warned that the school of whales and their carcasses may attract sharks.

They are advised to avoid the area and exercise extra caution.
