Thunderstorm Artis is his real name. Speaking about his name, Thunderstorm told the HONOLULU Magazine: “My parents thought they were having twins, so they were going to name one Thunder and one Storm. But it was just me.”

He added: “I love it! I feel it has power behind it and I try to use that energy when I perform, since I am naturally shy. It’s fun when I order something at Starbucks or when I travel—people always question if that’s my real name.”

Thunderstorm Artis is the son of Ron and Victoria Artis. His father, Ron Artis, was a celebrated Hawaii artist, known for painting more than 850 murals and resurrecting battered surfboards, including tributes to pro surfers Andy Irons, Kelly Slater and John John Florence, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. His dad died in 2010 after suffering a heart attack when Thunderstorm was 14 years old, and he started singing as a method of grieving.

His father, Ron Artis, worked with writer/producer Norman Whitfield at Motown and toured with Shalamar, and his mother, Victoria Artis, was a singer with an affinity for opera and jazz who worked with Lionel Richie.

Thunderstorm Artis is married to his wife Faith Artis McMaster, who’s from Australia. He got married in 2020 just four months after they met.

“My wife Faith first came into my life right when I had just done my blind audition for The Voice,” Artis told PEOPLE. “We met randomly at a concert. At the time, I didn’t think that true love really existed. And to my surprise, she came into my life and tore down a lot of these walls.”

The singer-songwriter was inspired by his wife Faith to write the song “Surprise”.

“We wrote ‘Surprise’ together in Nashville during the middle of last year,” Artis about the song he penned alongside Gabe Simon and Elsa Curran. “I knew I wanted to write a song about my wife. When you listen to the song, I just want people to be able to picture real love and how it enters your life.”

The Hawaii native lives in Nashville, Tenn., with his wife Faith and their two children, Ezekiel, born in June 2022, and Zion, born in September 2024.
